For teachers of neurodivergent students: what the law asks of you, what the documentation actually requires, and classroom practice that works within real workloads.

On 1 August, ordningsregler become skolregler with a consequence plan. Here is what that plan must not do to a neurodivergent student.

From 1 August 2026 every Swedish school must have school-wide skolregler containing a plan for consequences when the rules are broken, plus a förväntansdokument setting out what the school expects of students and guardians. Skolverket's support material is not due until 2027, so schools write these themselves this term. For students whose behaviour is a signal of unmet need, a uniform consequence ladder is the part that can go wrong.

What schools must do for neurodivergent students: a guide for school leaders

The duty to support neurodivergent students is not a policy ambition, it is law, and it sits with the school. This is the map for rektorer and huvudmän: what the ladder of support obliges you to do, the duties that sit outside it, where inspections keep finding gaps, and what to do about the constraints that make compliance hard.

What Skolverket says about AI in school, and what it means for support tools

Skolverket does not ban AI in school. It sets conditions: the use has to comply with the EU AI Act, personal data and student texts stay out, and no AI may replace a teacher's professional judgement or a grading decision. Here is what that means when the AI is there to help students who need support.

What is an utvecklingssamtal? The termly meeting where a struggling student should first be caught

Twice a year, Swedish law guarantees every student a meeting about how school can best support them and what help they need. The utvecklingssamtal is the earliest, most routine safety net for a neurodivergent student, and the one most easily wasted when the teacher walks in with a gut feeling instead of a real picture of the child.

There are one or two neurodivergent students in every Swedish classroom. Are teachers prepared for them?

The government estimates one to two students with NPF in every class, yet knowledge of neurodevelopmental conditions was only added to teacher-education exam goals in 2020. And research warns that training teachers about diagnoses is the wrong frame: a label does not tell a teacher what to actually do on Tuesday morning.

Swedish teachers spend about a third of their working time actually teaching

Skolverket's national mapping found that grundskollärare spend 34 percent of their work time on teaching itself. Much of the rest is administration, assessment, and documentation, and in 2025 a government inquiry proposed freeing that time up. For neurodivergent students, a heavy slice of that paperwork is the särskilt stöd documentation Skollagen requires.
